Wayland is a modern alternative to Xorg that provides more reliable and secure desktop experience with different approach to handling the standard issues such as drawing windows and security protocols. Wayland is not compatible with Xorg and therefore needs new software to work natively on it (though there is xwayland to not lose already existing software).
